Broken is a British film released in 2012, it is a drama film directed by Rufus Norris. The film is adapted from a novel of the same name by Daniel Clay and takes inspiration from to kill a mocking bird. The film stars Eloise Laurence and Tim Roth in lead characters.
The movie shows the summer holidays to have begun and 11 year old Skunk's like any other kid day dreams, is curious and wanders about the neighborhood with the exception that she must give herself injections regularly to combat the type 1 diabetes. One day she discovers her bitter, angry old neighbor, Mr. Oswald fiercely beating Rick, a psychologically disturbed boy from the locality whom Oswald's daughter has callously accused of rape, Skunk's innocence slowly begins to vanish.
She finds solace with her loving nanny and father with whom she is very close; Skunk is unintentionally drawn to her neighbors' unfolding melodrama concerning violence, sex, and life-shattering illness. Her neighborhood, home and her school all become bad environments where the happiness of childhood gives way to a complex, broken future. Overcome by experiences, Skunk gets drawn to an otherworldly chaos from which she may only come back through the deep love of those close to her.
The film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2012. The film received positive reviews from critics and won the British Independent Film award for the Best Film.
