This story is about Barbara, a reticent and cautious woman played brilliantly by Nina Hoss who is one of the German’s best film actresses. Barbara is a young pediatrician who is in service in East Berlin prestigious Charite hospital who is transferred as a punishment for applying for visa to move abroad. Though this is fiction story, the film has won the silver Bear at the Berlin film festival.
With amazing self-control, Barbara puts up repeated interference of Stasi officers and their embarrassing strip searches. She emotionally keeps herself away from her country with an only aim to leave it as she feels impossible to leave there. She expresses this before her West German Lover Jorg in her business trips to the German Democratic Republic who helps her in her escape.
Barbara keeps herself away from her boss with the fear that he may inform the Stasi officers. Very gently this film shows the affection developed by Barbara for Andre. You feel interesting to know whether the other side of the country brings freedom to Barbara for what she hopes. No other movie in the past few years about East Germany has touched to the emotions of people like Barbara (2012) which is a fine homage to people living in extra ordinary times. The movie received tremendous response from viewers due to its wonderful locations.
