Hindus And Sikhs: United In Tragedy, Divided By Politics

Both the religions of Hinduism and Sikhism were founded in the same Indian subcontinent and what connects the two religions so closely is that the founders of Sikhism were actually born in the Hindu families and castes, mostly the Kshatriyas families of the region which is also known as the Khatri region in Punjab. The close connection between the two religions is what that brings the essence of the two religions to such proximity and makes them indispensable from each other.

Mutual similarities of the sects

The religious and ethical decisions of both the sects have several similarities and have an extreme sense and obligation to duty towards life, family and nation. There have been several instances where the two religious groups has stood together with each other and faced the trouble together with brevity. The massacre of the Jhalianwala Bagh and the torture of General Dyer is a burning example of the unity of Hindus and Sikhs which is still fresh in the minds of the Indians. It is through continued testing of time that they have grown such a strong bond irrespective of the religious differences.

Instances of political disturbances

There have been many instances where the political parties have tried to play with the emotions of the common people and created a rift between the two religions for their selfish interests. The innocent and sentimental Hindus and Sikhs have momentarily forgot their mutual love and gave way to the manipulations of the political motives of the selfish men working against the interests of the country. But that has not corrupted the purity and sanctity of the mind of the common people. The riots and tragic situations have always played a dual role in the lives of these two peace loving sects who always believe in harmony.

Unity of the sects in times of tragedy

The instances such as the partition of India have seen the most brutal and painful instances of human tragedies especially the Hindus and Sikhs of the Northern regions of the country. In spite of the attacks and brutalities, the two sects stood and helped each other in the times of crisis and gave the world a brilliant example of their harmony and unity.

During the times of India’s emergency and assassination of our Prime Minister, the Sikhs were pointed at and killed mercilessly but that too was a political maneuver which was played against the innocent people to bring out some or the other benefit for the political parties. The Hindus and Sikhs have always lived and shared mutual love with each other, and the tragedies have always brought them closer irrespective of the political games played to divide them.
